Commentary: Determination must be made known at the court of the king, and announced honestly. When danger threatens, tell the kingdom, but desist from warfare. It is of benefit to do something.
Image: The lake rising to heaven symbolizes determination. Thus the superior man gives wealth to the lowly and does not rest on his laurels.
Changing Lines
1. Stepping out boldly at the wrong time, one fails.
2. When armed in readiness against attack evening and night one has nothing to fear.
3. Power in the cheekbones is inauspicious. The superior man walks alone, steadfastly. Caught in the rain, he becomes wet and gossip follows him, but is blameless.
4. With no skin on the thighs, walking is difficult. Being led like a sheep would bring an end to regret, but these words will not be heeded if heard.
5. Persistence is necessary to root out weeds. Walking the middle way is blameless.
